I AM What I Am

Featured

Sometimes a song* comes along your way with a powerful message that it resonates so very deeply in your soul. Here is one such song — full of pure authenticity, absolute world defiance, total self-esteem and infinite pride in one’s Self.

I am what I am
I am my own special creation
So come, take a look
Give me the hook or the ovation
It’s my world that I’d want to have a little pride in
My world and it’s not a place I have to hide in
Life’s not worth a damn till you can say
Hey world, I am what I am

I am what I am
I don’t need praise, I don’t need pity
I bang my own drum
Some think it’s noise (loud), I think it’s pretty
And so what if I love each feather and each spangle
Why not try and see things from a different angle
Your life is a sham till you can say
Hey world, I am what I am

I am what I am
And what I am needs no excuses
I deal my own deck
Sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces
It’s my life and there’s no return and no deposit
One life, so it’s time to open up your closet
Your life is a sham till you can say
Hey world, I am what I am

🙃

👩‍🎤 And there’s no one better than a good old tall shake of a Shirley Bassey to bring home its message. 😍

Life’s not worth a damn till you can say: “Hey world, I am what I am.

I am what I am, and what I am needs no excuses.
I deal my own deck: Sometimes the ace, sometimes the deuces.

It’s my life and there’s no return and no deposit!

ONE LIFE, so it’s time to open up your closet.
Your life is a sham till you can say: “Hey world, I AM what I am.
🥰

*Note:
The song comes from “La Cage aux Folles,” a Broadway musical with a book by Harvey Fierstein and lyrics and music by Jerry Herman. It is based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret. It focuses on a gay couple: Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub featuring drag entertainment, and Albin, his romantic partner and star attraction, and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges’s son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée’s ultra-conservative parents to meet them. La cage aux folles literally means “the cage of mad women;” however, folles is also a slang term for effeminate homosexuals (queens). Read a related post at Facebook.

        Loop Me In

Louis Armstrong: "What a Wonderful World"

It’s the kind of music I wouldn’t mind being perpetually looped in.

Keep me in its continuous playback, and never ever stop the playback device please… even when I die.

What a Wonderful World” [1970 Spoken Introduction Version] along with Oliver Nelson’s Orchestra is a song written by Bob Thiele (as George Douglas) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1968. Thiele and Weiss were both prominent in the music world (Thiele as a producer and Weiss as a composer/performer). Armstrong’s recording was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. Intended as an antidote for the increasingly racially and politically charged climate of everyday life in the United States, the song also has a hopeful, optimistic tone with regard to the future, with reference to babies being born into the world and having much to look forward to. The song was initially offered to Tony Bennett, who turned it down. Thereafter, it was offered to Louis Armstrong (August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971), nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, who was an American jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana.

“Some of you young folks been saying to me
“Hey Pops, what you mean ‘What a wonderful world’?

How about all them wars all over the place?
                You call them wonderful?

And how about hunger and pollution?
                They ain’t so wonderful either.”

Well how about listening to old Pops for a minute.
Seems to me, it ain’t the world that’s so bad
but what we’re doin’ to it.

And all I’m saying is see what a wonderful world
It would be if only we’d give it a chance.
Love baby, love. That’s the secret, yeah.
If lots more of us loved each other
                We’d solve lots more problems.
And then this world would be gasser.

That’s wha’ ol’ Pops keeps saying.”

I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom, for me and you
                And I think to myself
                What a wonderful world

I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night
                And I think to myself
                What a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces, of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, sayin’, “How do you do?”
They’re really sayin’, “I love you”

I hear babies cryin’, I watch them grow
They’ll learn much more, than I’ll ever know
                And I think to myself
                What a wonderful world

                Yes, I think to myself
                What a wonderful world
                Oh yeah!

Thank you, Louis, for being a wonderful man in a wonderful world. Oh, yeah!
