The imago Dei (“image of God”) does imply a relationship between God and man: a unique relationship of spiritual oneness by which our humanity or human nature is called upon to become the externalized fullness of our inherent divinity in Self-realization. We do not merely resemble God spiritually: We are identical in essence with the very Spirit essence of God, consistent with the nondualistic oneness taught in true mysticism.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:1-2,14 (CSBBible)
The quality of “understanding morality” should be taken to mean the ability to discern the truth of this oneness from the falsehood of illusory duality, and ultimately to become the embodiment of this Truth. This entails the process which is referred to as enlightenment or spiritual illumination.
As to how we as human beings may be different from animals or other sentient beings that are also deemed to have been made in the “image of God,” the difference is only one of degrees by which we have become self-aware and ultimately attain the “realization of God” (God-realization). Thus, spiritual traditions such as Hinduism speak of the god Vishnu incarnating in a number of evolutionary forms or species until he incarnates as the perfect man, Rama, and then finally the God-realized divine avatar, Krishna.
When the living God looks at the “image and likeness” of Itself in Its Mirror-Mind, God sees Itself as THE MAN IN THE MIRROR.
The Creator looks at Its own “image and likeness” in the mirror of Its Mind.
GOD: “WTF. Good God, help. My own good-looking image and likeness in my mirror-mind is alive and aware!”
